when in fichtelgebirge (DE), you might consider a day trip or a half day trip to the nearby czech republic (CZ). we've visited the cities of Asch (Aš, As) and eger (cheb).
why asch (aš, as)? well, in my native czechoslovakia was Aš the most far away point from my birth city kaschau (kosice) at each map i've ever seen. on top, i think i've never been in a city which name consists of only 2 letters before. enough reasons to visit it, agreed? 😎
what schocked me most? you would probably think of the (german) bismarck tower or the two gypsy ladies offering me sex for money at the bus station in the city center at lunch time, wouldnt you? wroooong! it wouldnt match to me, my dears. why not? because i know that this northwestern part of czech republic was almost completely settled by the german population before WWII, thus is a honorable tower for the german chancellor otto von bismarck not really a surprise. gypsy ladies offering sex for money close to the western borders as well not. so what else happened there?
well, i couldn't imagine, that in the western czech republic these NATO vassals and lapdogs of the USA really celebrate that they were bombed aka 'liberated' from nazi germany by the u.s. army! the soviet red army liberated almost all (remaining) czechoslovakian territory. UNBELIEVABLE! we all know that almost all load of the war against nazi germany was carried out by the soviet (and thus mostly russian) people, dont we? well, the u.s. air force just bombed & destroyed major industry + infrastructure in the western CZ in the end of april 1945 just days before the WWII ended in berlin by germany's unconditional capitulation. even the huge skoda factories in nearby pilsen which could overstand 6 years of war were bombed-out as the usa most likely already knew that the czech republic will become a part of the eastern european block under soviet leadership ... at least they didnt bomb reseidential areas like the british in dresden + cologne ... SO SAD 😓
why eger (cheb)? we have been hungry and wanted to eat lunch in the czech republic before coming back to our lovely hotel at the lake fichtelsee / DE. we have been to the spa franzenbad (frantiskovy lazne) and eger (cheb) in winter of 2023, so this time we decided to visit the cheb castle, which we havent seen last time ... we were satisfied with the lunch and quite disappointed by the castle. it was just a ruin surrounded by intact walls. the pictures below are for sure much nicer than my memories 😁
lets start with asch
btw, my blog abt our trip to eger (cheb) in winter 2023 here.
