what a nice visit to the cranach and martin luther city of wittenberg (lutherstadt wittenberg) in the german federal republic of sachsen-anhalt on our way back from christmas holidays (do you remember our stops in poland + stettin + castle kropstädt?)

1517 - 2017 = 500 years of reformation (in europe)? maybe, but in every case wait with your visit of wittenberg till 2017. why?  the chance that the reconstruction of the 3 most interesting cultural sites will be finished (luther's city curch, castle (church), luther's house)

on the way back from poland we have decided to make a break and visit s.th. interesting => we have chosen the lutherstadt wittenberg in sachsen-anhalt (martin luther's city wittenberg). well, we had to spend a night in an old castle hotel with just 1 more family out there ... even the hotel employees left the castle island at 8 p.m. we didn't care, my wife likes to talk to ghosts not only for her business purposes (hypnosis + reincarnation) anyway :-)

 the most rooms and corridors are (just) ordinary furnished as the socialistic era (there was a birth clinic for lone mothers before) took away a lot of former equipment

the current castle was built in 1855-1856. originally was there the water castle liesnitz (Wasserburg Liesnitz ~ built 1150 by local robber knights, destroyed 1358 by the wittenberg's.  according to the customs of that era was the site also damned and powdered with salt, so never ever comes any danger out of the place :-)

szczecin { stettin }

last stop on our poland trip was the former german city stettin (scszecin), a sad example about destructive power of wars .... not only germany lost that beautiful lands and lagoon around the river oder { odra } for ever, but there is even 60 years after the war still so much destruction + ugliness in the very centre of szczecin { stettin } that there is no doubt about the sheer devastation wars leave behind
just jump over to (english language) wikipedia: ... Allied air raids in 1944 and heavy fighting between the German and Soviet armies destroyed 65% of Stettin's buildings and almost all of the city centre, the seaport and local industries. ... curiously says the german language wikipedia, that the old city centre and the port were destroyed by 90% and the remaining parts of stettin by 70% ... i'm not going to seek how many people were killed during and short after the war as i'm still too depressed from swinemünde { Świnoujście } where the allied bombs killed 23,000 out of 40,000 inhabitants :-(

last but not least, szczecin is famous also for the solidarity (solidarnosc) movement and its leader lech walesa which was in 1980 the beginning of the end of socialism in eastern europe
